Wireless Access

Hello again guys.  I have been working on my 6.1.3.7 upgrade for my 3200XM controller running AP-65's (and one AP-135), which I think I have fixed for the most part.  Here is the next problem I have.  Anytime I do a speedtest to the net, I am only getting about 20-21mb of throughput.  If I am wired, I get our full 50mb.  If I connect to our Ubiquiti AP's, I get the full 50.  The other part to this is that I have an older 2400 controller at another site with AP-60 and 61's and it has the same issue.  Clients show connected at 54mb, but they can't get full speed.  Any thoughts to this, or a setting that might be incorrect?  Thanks.

Wireless is a shared medium.  If you are testing the Ubiquiti with no clients but your AP135 has clients on it, they all hav to share the bandwidth.  In addition, wireless has 50% overhead that needs to be taken into account. Wired is NOT a shared medium and it cannot be compared to wireless.

 

If you're getting 50Mbit on the Ubiquiti, it must be 11n? And so must your client?

 

If you get less on the 135, you must be contending with other users? And you're possibly not on the Ubiquiti?

Ok, let me rephrase this whole post. 

 

We have a 50mb connection to the internet.  On the wired network, I get 50mb throughput, which yes, I know that is not shared, even though the 50mb to the internet is between all users.  Let's say all of this takes place when I am the only one there (no other clients listed on the controller).  Now, if I connect to any Aruba AP, be it an AP-65 or the AP-135, I get 21-21mb MAX.  If I walk over down the hall to another room, which is part of the same LAN, and connect to one of our Ubiquiti AP's in there, I get the full 50mb.  This is all with a laptop that only will run 802.11b/g.

 

I did find that on the AP-135, if I enable the Temporal Diversity option in the High Throughput SSID area, I get the full 50mb throughtput on the AP-135, but it does not effect the AP-65's (still stuck at 20-21mb throughput).

You did not mention what client you are using.

This is weird. You cannot achieve 50Mbit on any client running b/g. It's impossible. Are you sure your client isn't 11n?

We have tested it with both an iPad, android phone, and windows 7 laptop connected with 11g. 11g is 54mb, so I am not sure why that is weird.

11b is only 11mb, so maybe that is what you are thinking?  11n can be 54mb to 600mb, in theory.

WiFi is half duplex so you NEVER get throughput that matches the negotiated rate. I would open a case with support.

With any wifi bit-rate, your maximum data rate is always about half. So 11b is about 5Mbit throughput max. This is due to protocol overheads, half-duplex, retrys etc etc.

i.e. 5Mbit throughput at 11Mbit associated rate. Any lower throughput rate is again, about half your associated rate...

even 802.11n clients gets 65mbps
