Aruba Controller 3200 Update

Hi everyone,

In order to add new APs I need to update two controllers 7200 and 3200 running ArubaOs 6.4.4.16 and 6.4.2.4 respectively, I wanna go to ArubaOs 8.x. At the moment they are connect to a Master controller that is in another country and I don't have any access to it, at most I can ask someone to do some configuration to release them from the master.

I need to know two things:

1 - Can I remove them from the master without major problemas, beyond licencing can I expect any known trouble in the process?

2 - For the 3200 is it possible to update for ArubaOs 8.x?

Many thanks for help.

Re: Aruba Controller 3200 Update

First, the 3200 will not run 8.x, it maxes out at AOS 6.5.

For removing the controllers from your master, if you want to blow away the config, sure. But a migration from 6.x to 8.x is a fairly involved process. If you're not comfortable or solid on that process, you may want to engage a local partner to strategize the best process to use for this effort.

If you're OK just starting over with AOS 8, you need to decide if you want an MM or if you want to run your contorller as a standalone. There's a lot to this so you may want to build a bigger map of your goals, if you want redundancy, if you want or expect to use some of the latest AOS 8.x features like clustering and airmatch (which requires an MM), and the best strategy to swing your APs over to 8.x

Re: Aruba Controller 3200 Update

Thanks for the answer jhoward,

Let me see if I get this right,

If I remove the controllers from the master I gonna have to reconfigure it,
or I will just loose the centralized configuration?

In the case I migrate the 7200 to AOS 8, I gonna have to reconfigure it?

I already reviewed the process few times and It doesn't seams that
complicated, I also analyse the configurations made in both controllers and
there's nothing really fancy, but of course if I have to reconfigure it,
will take quite a while and I need to make a better plan for this.

Re: Aruba Controller 3200 Update

If you remove a controller from the master in 6.x you can only configure very limited things like layer 2 and layer 3 interfaces.  The global WLAN configuration is read-only on a local.  Your only choice would be to factory reset it, if you have a root password.  If you do that, you would lose the licenses, unless you recover them before factory resetting them.  If centralized licensing is currently being used, you might not have any licenses to operate the separated controller.

Any migration from 6.x to 8.x requires a factory reset and yes, reconfiguration.

If you do your research, it is certainly doable.

Re: Aruba Controller 3200 Update

Hi cjoseph,

So if I change the controllers to master in other things achieve a master
backup state, and then break the connection, in this case I wouldn't have
to reconfigure in first moment, correct? The controller would have full
access to its configuration files? Then I would be able to update in a
second step.

About the license I checked and they can operate alone.

Thanks for helping.

Re: Aruba Controller 3200 Update

Is it possible to have a master local topology between the 7200 running OS8 and the 3200 running OS6.5?
