    Hi,

I plan to buy Aruba AP from eBay for my home lab.

    QUESTIONS:

    1. Is ClearPass an AP Controller

    2. Do I must use hardware controller to manage AP

    3. Can I use RAP-3 with ClearPass

    4. How long trial license of ClearPass

    5. What is cheapest AP and controller model that supported by latest Aruba OS

    thanks

    1) ClearPass is a policy engine/RADIUS server

    2) If they have a model beginning with "AP" (not IAP), then yes you need
    a controller

    3) A RAP-3 would be used with a controller, not ClearPass

    4) A trial license is 90 days

    5) I'm not sure of pricing, but a 3400+ controller with 105+ APs would
    probably your best bet.

Cisco, AeroHive, Ruckus have virtual controller.

Are you sure Aruba doesn't have virtual controller?

Aruba IAPs elect a virtual controller. Campus APs require a hardware controller.

Aruba does not have a virtual controller that supports wireless, no. That may change in the future but as for right now, there is not.

I am just in a project in which my  need is just this :(

Even Aerohive now offer a VC.

Do you have availability date for this Project?

And, what are my options in Aruba? I mean, the 7240 Controller just support 32,000 Users, what I can use for more users?

    Jess O. Ortiz,

Please see the controller matrix here:  http://www.arubanetworks.com/products/networking/controllers/

    Thanks Joseph,

As I said, the 7240 just supports 32,000 users.

    "Maximum concurrent devices: 32,768"

I need a more high capacity of users, with a flexible capacity of add AP, like in a Virtual Controller.

I think that AirWave is my only option with Aruba Networks.

Joseph, Do you know what is the maximum capacity of users that supports the AirWave License?

We are going a small deploy of 40 AP.

    Have a nice day.

Aruba Instant uses a virtual controller that runs on one of the APs. Sounds like that might be your best option.

Hey, Thanks for the reply Tim!

We expect a very, very high amount of users, and the ability of control the AP is critical so, we need a Virtual Controller and I think that AirWave is my salvation (I hope).

If this were a non enterprise network, Instant is ok but due to is a Enterprise Network, Management just become critical.

    Thanks Tim.

Jess, if you need to support more than 32k devices, you simply cluster more controllers together. You can put together qty6 7240 controller which could support 6,000 APs and up to 96,000 users with full 1:1 redundancy, or 10,000 APs and up to 160,000 users with N+1 redundancy, etc.

AirWave can monitor and manage them all. Airwave supports deployments of 4,000 APs per server and you can cluster servers together to monitor up to 100,000 APs with the AIrWave Master Console.

For a deployment this large, you would want to sync up with your local sales team and qualified partners who are trained in dpeloyments this large.

    Thanks Howard!

My Country Tech Chief from Aruba was who tell me about AirWave, althought due to work we can talk more and still I don´t know how so much users can support Airwave.

We are working very near with Aruba Engineers for this Project, meanwhile I am doing research.

    Have a nice day!

If the user count will be high, you should consider a physical controller.

    Thanks,
    Tim

In fact in this Deployment, Controller is almost the most critical factor to evaluate.

I still hope the Virtual Edition of the Controller from Aruba while AirWave it does well.

    Thanks Tim.

    1. If I purchase a 3x00 controller does it have a base ap count license?

    3. Is there virtual software for the management suite? If so is it available for trial?

Not all 3 series controllers have built in licenses. You'd have to ask the seller.

You can request a trial of AirWave from your local Aruba or partner account team.

I just bought refurbished Aruba Dell W-3400 and 2pcs of AP-125.

I don't know it has license or not.

Without any license, what it can do or can't do.

Or can I get trial license

    How long the license last.

Can I renew the license by reset to factory default.

    This just for practice only

    thanks

Thank you for your rocket response

I am not so clear here

<The trial license can be reset by factory default, yes>

Do you mean after 90days, I reset to factory default, apply old license then I can extend another 90days

That's correct. Using the trial/eval keys, you can re-use them 3 times for up to 90 days. After 90 days or before, you will have to backup the config (NOT a flash backup), wr erase all, and then either re-configured (great practice) or paste in the new config. you cannot use the flash backup as it will restore the old key timers and will show expired upon reboot.

    Hi,

Why you don´t search to become an Aruba Partner?

I mean, with this investment, sure you can get an AP204 and the controller, yes, you can go with ebay.

Aruba offer a great discount for NFR devices.

I wonder why you don´t go directly with Aruba, may be by budget (How much did you spend on this kit?).

    Have a nice day.
