How to enable AP-535 4X4:4 802.11ax MU-MIMO function

   From AP-530 Series datasheet, AP-535 supports 5GHz radio 4SS single user (HE80) up to 2.4Gbps or two 2SS HE80 802.11ax MU-MIMO capable device simultaneously.

I used Samsung S10+ that supports 802.11ax 2.4G+5GHz, HE80 for throughputs validating device. The downlink throughputs in the application layer could reach up to 800Mbps. However, as I tried to let the second Samsung S10+ do the same test at the same time. Each of the Samsung S10+ had dropped to 350~400Mbps individually.

I checked the document saying that MU-MIMO is enabled by default. But somehow from my expectation, the AP-535 4X4:4 should provide two 2SS HE80 devices reach the total capacity like 2.4Gbps in the link layer rather than 2 S10+ with total capacity around 800Mbps in the application layer.

Below is the configuration parameter setting for the access-points. Please kindly provide suggestions to enable MU-MIMO function. 2.jpg3.jpg

I was unable to find a configuration parameter within the Aruba Instant GUI (I'm guessing you're using Instant). But MU-MIMO is enabled by default for APs that support it.

In Controller based WLAN configuration you do have some settings within the High Efficiency (HE) radio profile settings for MU-MIMO (again here it is enabled by default also): https://www.arubanetworks.com/techdocs/ArubaOS_86_Web_Help/Content/arubaos-solutions/1cli-commands/wlan-he-ssid-pro.htm?Highlight=mu-mimo

Re: How to enable AP-535 4X4:4 802.11ax MU-MIMO function

A couple of things to consider:

- Client device may not support MU-MIMO

- Many 2x2 client devices drop to single spatial stream when using MU-MIMO, so the effect will only become visible when using 3 or more of these devices

- If you're testing with TCP traffic, the uplink acks may reduce the effectiveness of MU-MIMO (MU-MIMO is downlink only)

Re: How to enable AP-535 4X4:4 802.11ax MU-MIMO function

Thanks for the feedback. I did the downlink "UDP" traffic test to the testing three Samsung S10+ devices. Each device throughputs went down unstably to 10Mbps~150Mbps.

The attachments have included AP radio status and radio info during the downlink traffic test. Below is the log with filter criteria "mu_mimo" for 3 mobile phones receiving UDP packets simultaneously.

I have difficulty understanding these parameters like SU: 136110 or ax_mu_mimo_brp*. Could anybody provide documents to look up these parameters? The "MU_MIMO" of "Reception Type" always remains zero from testing one UE with traffic to three UEs with traffic. Does it mean MU_MIMO was not functioning? I found the parameter SU has increased during one UE with traffic to three UEs with traffic. But I really don't know what is the unit of SU: 136110.

Please kindly provides precious suggestions, thank you all very much.

Nice finding. This would be also useful for AP-555. As according to the datasheet:

5GHz radio (dual-radio operation): Eight spatial stream Single User (SU) MIMO for up to 4.8Gbps wireless data rate with individual 8SS HE80 (or 4SS HE160) 802.11ax client devices, or with eight 1SS or four 2SS HE80 802.11ax MU-MIMO capable client devices simultaneously
