    I am sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this. I have recentally taken over the wireless network on our campus and am confused about how the controllers interact with the access points and internet comes into play. Does the internet traffic all get piped through the controllers or do the access points get the internet from the network they are attached to? Appreciate the help in understanding this.

    It depends on what forwarding mode you have your virtual APs setup in. 

     

     

    • Tunnel or D-tunnel mode - all traffic is sent through the controller
    • Bridge mode - all traffic is sent out locally through the AP/switch

    Most deployments are in tunnel mode.  You can see the forward mode in the WebUI or CLI:

    show wlan virtual-ap <name of your virtual ap>
