Local dependancy on Master for HA

We have a master / backup master pair (VRRP) at a centralized data center, managing 7 large facilities that each use a pair of locals in LMS HA configuration (all 7200's). Last night, the AP's at one of the sites rolled over to the backup LMS and the primary local WLC log indicates that it was unable to heartbeat the master.  The AP's at the other 6 sites stayed put on their primary LMS. It's likely that there was a brief issue with the WAN circuit between the remote facility and the data center that caused the missed heartbeat to the master, but why would that trigger the AP's to roll from the primary to the backup LMS?  Where is the Local/Master heartbeat configured?

Please include the log messages from the local WLC log to avoid confusion. The term HA gets reused for multiple redundancy options. Depending on the method being used, failover can show up differently.

I suspect that the APs were unable to heartbeat with the local WLC (LMS), which is why they switched to the backup LMS.

The missed heartbeat with the master controller from the local controller would not have caused the APs to switch to their backup LMS on it's own. Rather, it's more likely an indicator of a network event that could have interrupted the connection between the APs and this local controller as well.

There's not enough information here to be definitive. If you have AP logs from the time of the event, that could help deduce what occurred. If getting to the root cause is critical, I suggest getting a case open with TAC so they can review the logs from the local controller.
