    Hello!

    Problem description:

I have a controller who will not accept an update of the Aruba OS.

    The details:

The Aruba controller is a 3400 in a single controller enviroment.

The controller today runs on ArubaOS 6.0.1.2.

Partition #2 has ArubaOS 5.0.4.8 (After a successfull upgrade from a lower 5.0.x.x version)

My plan was to upgrade the 5.0.4.8 to 6.1.3.4 (latest).

However, after the firmware has been uploaded (I can see that alot of trafic is going through the network as well as tftpd) nothing happens and the firmware is "rejected". Meaning it´s not there if I later check via the CLI.

After a long time it times out.

There are both more then enough free flash & memory on the controller. I have also tested to upgrade partition 1 (6.0.1.2) to 6.1.3.4 with no success. Same symptom.

And as I cannot get the firmware on to the controller I cannot use the CLI to upgrade and get a better error message.

The controller is also in a remote location.

Do you guys have any tip on how to proceed?

    Best Regards

    Mikael

Have you tried to upload it with the regular GUI, but not with TFTP?

Hello and thank you for your replay.

Yes I have. Multiple times accually. Both via a WAN link but also via the local network (connection via teamviewer to a pc on the local site).

I´m sorry if that wasn´t clear in my original post.

    Best Regards

    Okay.

Does the animation just keep going?  How long do you wait?

Yes, the animation keeps on going. Both forward and backwards. It loops like that for about 15min before it times out.

I can see that there are some transfer in the beginning of my "upgrade" process. So the file transfer is happening. But then nothing.

Can you SSH into it, or not?  I am not clear on that..

If you can, type "show log system 50" to see if you can see anything.

Also, type "show memory" to see if there is enough memory.

Also using the GUI, try to delete any files that you do not need on the controller.

If you can SSH into it, try to put a file locally on a FTP or TFTP server and use the commandline to upgrade it...

    Hello!

Yes, I can SSH into the controller.

WIth the log system I get, unfortunatly, nothing

    Sep 20 00:30:09 :304035:  <ERRS> |stm|  PAPI_Send failed: 145; from 8419 to 10.1.30.70:8225 len 230 type 3049
    Sep 20 09:19:52 :303022:  <WARN> |AP d8:c7:c8:c2:3e:ca@10.1.30.113 nanny|  Reboot Reason: No reboot message found.

Time for upload of the image is now about 15:05 on the controller.

Memory (Kb): total: 761344, used: 331932, free: 429412

So, 430 Mb of mem free should be very much enough.

I can try to delete some old files, but there are not many (below 7).

I have tried putting a tftp server on the local network and upload the image, same problem. It times out :/

I have not tried with a local ftp server, only remote which were blocked by variouse reasons.

Did you try "copy tftp".... using the commandline?

That would give you better feedback...

Yes, I did that. It transfered with the ****

After some time it timed out though. The transfer seen on the tftp server side did continue though. But no file were found.

I´m gonna try a local ftp server now.

A local ftp server did it. Finally!

Really strange that it did not work with any of the other methods.

Thank you for taking the time to help me out cjoseph! I really apprichiate it!

    Best Regards

Some TFTP servers cannot transfer over 50 megs.  Glad it worked out!

What TFTP server software did you use?   The original protocol had a 32MB file limit (now around 4GB I think), but some older TFTP servers still have that limit.    Also, TFTP is UDP based vs. FTP which is TCP based, so perhaps there were some networking related issues between the controller adn your TFTP source.

I used one called TFTPD. DUnno if it has a limit..

I never had much luck using TFTP for firmware files.  Aside from the file limit (changed to 4GB in 1998), TFTP is "unreliable."  Even on a standalone network consisting of a single workstation and a switch I found that TFTP had a very low success rate.

I use the GUI and local file method when prepping new controllers, and FTP (Filezilla works great) for those that are already deployed.

I have never seen that message before.  Do you have a screenshot?  What method are you using to upgrade?
