Wireless Access

The short story here is that we need to modify the management VLAN that our APs reside on.  We originaly configured the APs with static IP addresses.  Now we need to change them over to DHCP so that we can make those changes to the VLAN itself.  Is there any mechanism that will allow us to move multiple APs at a time from static IP addressing to DHCP? 

 

The current model is extremly laborious and inefficient.  Thanks for any input.

Unfortunately, there is not.  There is a way to do it via the commandline, but the gui would take much less time, believe it or not.

 

Having access points with static ip address is considered the exception, not the rule, so there is nothing to automate converting between static and DHCP.

Thanks for the input.  Just out of curiousity, why is Static addressing the exception?  Are most customers using AirWave for monitoring and/or simply logging into the controllers to monitor what is down?  Or is FQDN the norm?  Thanks.

 

 

In the end and IP addresses only needed to deliver packets to and from an access point. The controller keeps track of the IP address of the access point so administrators do not need to. Administrators are also free to flexibly change the IP address structure if access points use DHCP. Managing IP addresses is a huge burden and using DHCP remove some of that burden.

Thanks.  Just wondering.  We tied the controllers to our homegrown monitoring tool.  The easiest way to do that was static IPs.  Take care.

Tying the controller to your monitoring device is not a problem. If you monitor the access point via SNMP on the controller it will return the current IP address of the access point so that it does not have to be statically defined. A lot of people just use airwave which does this automatically.

you can reprovision multiple APs in one go.  They need to be in the same ap-group and ap model.  My experience is that up to about 8 in a single go is fine.
