Tunnel mode traffic path

As a newbie, I need some help understanding what equipment touches the data as it travels to and from the AP in tunnel mode.  When tunnel mode traffic makes it to the controller, does the controller dump the data out to the VLAN interface on the nearest wired network switch, or does it send it back still in the tunnel if it doesn't need to leave the originating VLAN or IP SUBNET?  The reason I ask is I'm trying to determine what object is dropping some packets.  Is it the controller or the switch/router with the vlan interfaces that the controller is connected to.

    Thanks for any insights,

    Bill
