Wireless Access

I configured the the controller with two profiles, employee and guest. just basic configuration to get everything running. with employee  authenticating with radius server. with vlans extended to my LAN and guest being controlled with an ACL on the switch. 

 

the problem is that download is painfully slow. when I issued a continuous ping to my core switch I get request timed out every 20 probes. and i think that is what causing the download to be slow, if not i want to fix this packet loss also I want to tackle the problem of slow download. 

 

both virtual ap are running on 2.4ghz band, i also noticed from inssider network scanner that employee and guest are both on 2.4 and on the same channel 11 on the same access point, is that supposed to cause interference? but inssider says that there is no overlapping channels. if some one can explain that to me?

 

any help is highly appreciated. because I looked every where and no one with similar problem. I tried enabling bcmc optimization under IP, also I tried enabling bcmc rate optimization under SSID profiles. also I don't understand the difference between the two.

I would enable Broadcast Filtering ALL to start.

 

A single access point will broadcast that broadcasts two wireless networks only has a single radio, so they must be broadcast on the same band.

 

Dropping a single ping out of 20 is not bad.  If the ping is taking 500 to 700 milliseconds or more, that could be an issue.

I tried to lookup the Broadcast filtering on webui with no luck, then I tried the cli help but couldnt get any where with command help. can you please tell where to apply the command in which mode and what is the complete syntax of the command. 

 

if a drop every 20 pings is ok then tell me if the following is ok too. when I download a file from internet using my LAN I get rates of 500kBps, while when using my wireless LAN i get only 34 kBps. is that normal.

Broadcast Filtering is under the Virtual AP.  Configuration> Wireless> AP Configuration> Edit AP Group.  Expand Wireless Lan> Expand Virtual AP.  Click on Your Virtual AP.  In the right Pane, Enable Broadcast Filtering.  Do the same thing to both Virtual APs.

 

Wireless is a shared medium, so you will NEVER get the throughput you get on a wired network.

 

Wired test :
Have you tried using the same VLAN you are using on the VAP while connect directly into controller and doing the same test ?

Also run the following command to make there's no layer 1 issue show port stats and see if there's any errors and perform the same on your uplink .
This way you can eliminate that there's no issues all the back to your core connection .
And also will allow to create a baseline from a wired perspective back to your server or out to the Internet

RF health :

Do the following
show ap arm rf-summary ap-name <apname>
Show ap arm history ap-name <apname>

These two command will give you an idea if you have any RF issues

What AOS do you have installed ?

How do you have your connection setup back to the uplink ?

i tried the wired test, I put port 1 in access mode and on vlan 150 same vlan on wireless, I  tried to download I get 11kBps which is slower than wireless. what that tell you.

this is the result. GE 1/4 is the uplink (controller to switch connection). it is fine no error bytes nothing.

Is it possible that you connect directly into your controller and configure one of the ports as an access port ? So we eliminate an issue back to your core or even your wireless card (make sure drivers have updated) not to compare wired vs wireless throughtput

Also do a test with transferring a file internal to your network first

Based on the ap arm history the ap hasn't changed channels because interference since Thursday but you should also try using the show ap arm rf-summary ap-name <apname>
To see if there's a lot of layer 2 retries and noise on that particular channel

I connected my laptop to port 1 on the 650 controller, which I made as an access port and joined it to the same wireless vlan. download is 2.1 Mbps upload is 6 Mbps on speedtest.net. when I connect my computer to the access switch i get download 6.75 Mbps and upload 6.83 Mbps.

 

in our network we have a dsl line and a leased line to the internet with multi link stonegate firewall, I think the difference between the two tests is not much, because we are connecting over the leased line, which has lower download speed. if the test would go over the dsl, the differnce would be much higher.

 

the output from the command is attached, for better view.

but I couldn't understand much from it. 

 

Dear all, 

 

if "ping request drop every 40 pings" is normal, then my wireless network is fine. I connected a mac to my wireless network and started the speed test, I got the same speed as my dsl line speed. there is nothing wrong with my wireless infrastructure, the problem is with windows machines and specifically my machine.

 

thank you all for helping me, 2 weeks before I didnt know anything about aruba. today, thanks to this comunity, I have set up 8 IAP with 1 650 controller also with radius authentication.
