It's used to aggregate ports for redundancy.

Say you have controller and a stack with 2 members. The ports used by member 1 and member 2 are an aggregate as well. You can connect port 1 to member 1 and port 2 to member 2. When member 1 fails, you'll still have the port 2/member 2 connection.

Port Channels can be used for redundancy, but to also increase the bandwidth between two devices.  Aruba typically advises that the controller should have a 1 gig connection to your switch for each 100 APs that you have connected to a controller.  If you have 200 APs on a controller but you do not have a 10 gig switch, you would port-channel two gigabit ports between an Aruba Controller and a switch to increase your bandwidth.  Port Channels can be configured using LACP   (dynamic port channel) or as a static port channel.
