Upgrade IAP335 to 8.X

    Hi all,

     

    I just want to update my LAB IAP335 from 6.5.X to 8.4. Regardless whether I try 8.3 or the new 8.4 I end up with this:

    Upgrade at the OS level shows no error but I cannot boot from any 8.X Version. Upgrade from apboot fails with "Image too big!?"

    Any 6.X Version works as expected

    Any ideas?

    Please check the support bulletin 1804-1 from: https://support.arubanetworks.com/Documentation/tabid/77/DMXModule/512/EntryId/5192/Default.aspx:

     

    Summary

    The APboot image that is loaded on a very small number of early 310 and 330 Series Campus Access Points limits the size of the actual firmware image to 14MB max (even though we have 128MB of FLASH memory available in hardware).

    While this is not a problem for any AOS and most Instant images, the Instant 8.3 (and later) firmware images for these platforms do exceed 14MB in size. As a result, the affected AP units cannot be upgraded to Instant 8.3 (or later).

    Unfortunately, returning the units to be upgraded in the factory (loading a new APboot version) is the only way to remove this image size restriction.

     

    Please contact Aruba TAC to get your AP swapped out.

    Hi,

     

    Can someone inform me about the manufacturing dates of affected 335 IAPs? Or serial number range? I can't view this information (requires support contract).

     

    I'm in the market for a few IAP 335s for use in my house and want to make sure they are not affected (considering I will be buying secondhand I dont think HPE will agree to swap them out?)

     

    Also does this affect any other models?

    We don't publish any mappings of serials to date codes. That said, if you get one that is one of the very early units (very unlikely) you can call support and likely get it replaced under the LLW.

    I'm eyeing a 335 right now that was made in Nov 2016, would this be an early one or was the issue sorted by that date?

    Herman - That link you provided is dead (on the old support site).    Do you have an updated link pointing to that support bulletin?  We are working with a school district that has around 1100 AP-315's (operating as CAPs), around 40 of which are experiencing this exact issue when trying to upgrade to 8.10.0.1.    We'd like to have the actual support bulleting report to reference when speaking to TAC.

    Contacted you directly as well. I could not find that bulletin 1804-1 publicly posted. TAC should be able to find the relevant info if you contact them and refer to the bulletin number and/or this page on Airheads community.

    just open a TAC Case. It is the only way because AP needs to be replaced.

    We're working on an update of that field bulletin to reflect the fact that it's possible to upgrade the APboot version to one that can handle larger image sizes though an intermediate step: upgrade/convert the AP to AOS 8.7.1.0 or later (8.7.x.y) or 8.6.0.18 or later (8.6.x.y), before upgrading it to the desired version.
