6300 Smart-rate Switch POE won't power Neat Pad

  • 1.  6300 Smart-rate Switch POE won't power Neat Pad

    We purchased a few 6300 Smart Rate switches (JL659A) and stacked them with standard 6300 Switches (JL661A) With the smart rate switches being member 1 of the stack in order to power our AP's. We started to add some of the Neat Pads (https://neat.no/pad/) in our office and found that the standard 6300 switch will power them but non of the 6300 Smart Rate switches will power them.

    The POE specs for the Neat Pad our as follows

    Neat Pad is compliant with 802.3at PoE+ (Class 4/mode A)

    The standard 6300 switches are class4  but the smart rate switches can do up to class 6 using A and B pairs. I have modified the POE settings so they are set for class4 and A mode with no luck. I have also change various settings in hope to make it work but haven't be able to. I am able to power a polycom phone and cisco phone on the smart rate switch.

    It just seems odd the the standard switch will power the Neat bar but the Smart Rate switch won't. I have talked to TAC but they have not been able to come up with a fix. I'm hoping someone can help.

    Have you enabled LLDP for the port? Not sure if this will help with PoE negotiation. Have you seen this blurb on the PoE?

    Technical Specifications

    Neat Pad is compliant with 802.3at PoE+ (Class 4/mode A).

    Note: The Neat Pad supports Power over Ethernet Mode A only. Therefore, any network switch providing PoE based power to Neat Pad also needs to support Mode A.

    In our testing, we have found the following switches to be incompatible as they only support Mode B (this is not an exhaustive list):

    • Meraki MS355-48FP
    • Meraki MS225-48FP
    • DELL N3248 PXE-ON

    For incompatible switches, the PoE injector included with the Neat Pad kit can be used to provide power to the unit.

    I'm afraid that's mutually exclusive. IEEE PoE powered devices are obligated to support both power modes. The choice of mode is entirely up to the PSE. See clause 33.3.1: "The PD shall be capable of accepting power on either of two sets of PI conductors. The two conductor sets
    are named Mode A and Mode B."

    If you find that that's the problem you should open a ticket with Neat and/or return the pads.

    LLDP is turned on globally for TX, RX and Trap 

    We have changed the port to be exactly like a non smart rate switch.

    interface 6/1/23 
        no shutdown
        power-over-ethernet assigned-class 4
        power-over-ethernet power-pairs alt-a

    Th output below shows the POE settings for a smart rate and non smart rate and they are exactly the same but no POE on the smart rate switch.
