Given that you have just 27 of the WAPs that won't upgrade, have you considered replacing those with used 214s and 215s -- available quite cheaply -- and then you can upgrade to 8.6? Once you are at 8.6, you can add aps from the 500/510/530/550 series.
Strategically replacing very old APs with not-quite-as-old APs in a series of intermediate steps to a complete upgrade allows you to keep a much simpler network topology and makes the most of a limited budget. There are lots of variations and the best plan for you will depend upon your specific timeframe and budget, but the fact that aruba hardware is of such high quality means that the APs that other customers have upgraded out of still have lots of life left in them.

Subject: add new access point to vc on network of old ones
Hi,
New to this but have inherited a network of about 80 waps on 1 vc. mixture of about 7 204s, 20 205's and 305s and 315s.
I want to add new waps to the vc but from what ive read they will be on too new a firmware and we cannot upgrade the existing one with those old waps.
whats the best way forward with new ones? have a second vc? if so will it need to be on a different vlan to the other one?
Thanks
