AOS 8.10.0.6 and AirPrint

We recently upgraded from 8.7.1.10 to 8.10.0.6 and AirPrint discovery seems to be broken.  We have a few AirPrint printers that will show up on iOS/iPadOS devices for about 10-20 after the printer reboots. Then, like clockwork, they disappear and won't show up again until the printer reboots. After about 10-20 minutes, the issue repeats itself. I tested the printers on the wired and wireless networks. The issue is the same on both.

Curiously, the printers themselves always show in the AirGroup servers list, on the cluster, and never disappear. Macs can always see them as available bonjour printers, but they disappear on iOS and iPadOS.

Is anyone aware of any bugs? AirPrint discoverability by iOS and iPadOS devices in 8.7.1.10 was solid.

Are you able to add a policy group entry to manually add to an ap-group for it to show up and test?

    airgroup policy ap-group device-mac <mac address>  <ap group name>

    Thanks

I would love to, however, this command is deprecated in 8.10. It's ridiculous. There's no way to control wired AirGroup servers in 8.10 and beyond without the use of CPPM, which we do not have.

However, when the printer is connected to wifi, it auto-associates to the ap-group. The printer's still become undiscoverable after 10-20 minutes on iOS.

I believe we have been told that the command is still present in the choices to use.

Test it out to see if working.

I'm hoping that I'm wrong and something is in the works to bring this command back. However, here is the result from the CLI in 8.10.0.6:

    (ArubaMM) [SEM] #airgroup policy ap-group device-mac 30:E1:71:39:9C:06 add LS_Campus_ap
    This command is deprecated.

Does it show the entries doing this:

     show airgroup policy-entries

    No.

    (ArubaMM) [SEM] #show airgroup policy-entries
    This command is deprecated.

We are in the same boat with no Clearpass about to go from 8.6.0.19 to 8.10.0.7 when released, but not sure as no support for policy-entries any longer.

When you move to 8.10, can you update this thread about your experiences with AirPrint printers and if they drop off in iOS like mine do?

8.12 add support back in, with caveats:

    https://www.arubanetworks.com/techdocs/ArubaOS-8.x-Books/Release-Notes/812/ArubaOS-8.12.0.0-Release-Notes.pdf

    AirGroup Server Based Policy Support
8.12.0.0 relaunches support for Server Based Policy in v2. This feature has the following conditions:
n AirGroup is used with no CPPM.
n There are less than 512 wired servers.
n Customers want to configure specific devices to add location details for visibility.
n CLI policy profile is set at the /md level only.
n Applicable only to centralized mode.
n Not applicable for MDs running in distributed mode in 8.10 (i.e. Managed devices with v1).

Thanks. Our Aruba SE let me know that they were adding this functionality back in to 8.12 but wasn't sure when it would be released. I'll give this a go over the Summer.

There will be some APs that are not supported in 8.12, so be sure to check whether the version supports all APs.

    That's great

However, the 8.12 direct mail is 8.12.0.0, so it's better to wait for a while.

Agreed. I'm hoping there are a few 8.12 updates before we decide to upgrade in June or July.

Yeah I noticed that as well. However, I disconnected one of our printers from the wired network and connected it to wifi. The issue remains. It shows up for 10-20 minutes on iOS then disappears until the printer is rebooted. It's not a sleep issue either on the printers. I've maxed out the sleep settings on all of them.

Just a quick update. We upgraded to 8.10.0.7 over the weekend and the issue remains. AirPrint devices are visible to iOS/iPadOS for 10-20 minutes after a reboot. Then they drop off completely. However, Macs can find them without a problem using Bonjour. That's never been an issue.

Curiously, the records are always visible in the controller, it's just that iOS/iPadOS devices can't see them.

I'm assuming this is a bug and will open a case with TAC. Although, I'm not looking forward to going down that rabbit hole of lost time.

Do you see the same problem for Airplay or just Airprint? Also are the MAC's on wired or wireless?

    Thanks

    Hi Robert,

It's just AirPrint. Our Macs are both wired and wireless. I tested the printers on both wired and wireless as well but still the same result.

Again, bonjour discovery seems okay. AirPrint discovery dies after 10-20 minutes for each printer. However, the records are visible on the controllers.

I have a TAC appointment at 12PM today so they can look at it.

Sure, no problem. However, my recent experiences with TAC have proven to be a waste of time.

And no, we do not have CPPM. We use FortiNAC for network access control.

Just incase this helps anyone, we ended up downgrading back to 8.7.1.11 within the first few weeks of September. AirPrint is stable, somewhat, in 8.7 and not in 8.10.

Since moving to AOS 8, we've always had an issue with wired AirGroup servers disappearing after several days or weeks. This includes AirPlay and AirPrint servers. The only workaround is to reboot the MC or disable/renable Openflow.

After exhausting all troubleshooting measures, and using months of TAC support that led nowhere, I decided to take a spare AP-303h, disable the radios, and plug our wired AirPrint printers directly into the AP. These printers no longer disappear from clients and the controllers. It's been months and they're completely stable.

We do have a number of Apple TVs still wired in to the network and they continue to disappear after several days/weeks. However, that's not that big of an issue because Apple TVs also utilize bluetooth for discovery.

There have been a few newer dot releases of 8.10 since we downgraded but I have no idea if these issues have been fixed or not.

    You might try 8.10.0.10

But I have not encountered this problem, so it may need to be tested in a lab environment.

Thanks for responding. Do you have a lot of wired AirPrint servers on your network? For whatever reason, I have a hard time finding others using AirGroup with AirPrint, wired or wireless.

There is no airgroup server in my network environment, it only appears in the customer's network.
