AP315 not discovered by ADP

    Hello,

I am new in the aruba networks and I'm trying to run aruba 7010 with 2 x AP315 (those are not the IAP).
I've configured the initial setup of the controller (OS 6.5.4.12) and it looks like the controller works right now as expected (like the switch).
I've connected to the controller two AP315 (after factory reset) and I've expected that the ADP will automatically detect those devices but in fact this not happened. It looks like the booting on the APs is over and over again. I've checked the ADP if it is enabled and it looks like it is.
I don't have the AP license applied yet but at start I want to check if my devices are correctly discovered and I want to see the controller message that there is no license but the APs are connected.

Is this possible or at start I need to activate the license for the APs?

Do you have the APs connected to the VLAN which holds the 'controller-ip'?
And do the APs get an IP address? In such case having a serial console cable may help to determine what happens and how the controller discovery is performed (what methods). I think ADP is quite late in the list of other discovery methods (static, DHCP, DNS, etc).

Without license, I think the AP is supposed to be visible on the controller but with the L-flag (unlicensed) in show ap active.

Thank you for your answer. Good to hear that my understanding is correct and at start I should be able to connect the APs to the controller without the license.
I've the controller ip defined as IPv4 VLAN 1: 192.168.1.254 (default gateway 192.168.1.1) and my APs are connected to the 1st and 2nd port of the controller.
I don't think that those APs get the ip address.
This is what I see from the AP pcap (repeated many times):

Do you have a DHCP server running in that VLAN? That would typically run on the default gateway.

If you plug in your laptop wired in the AP port, do you get an IP address in that case?

Yes, my understanding is that the DHCP is handled by the router so the DHCP server inside the aruba 7010 is not enabled. I am able to connect another devices to this network e.g right now I have my laptop connected to the controller and under the 192.168.1.1 I see the router configuration site under 192.168.1.254 I see the aruba controller configuration site and I have also access to the internet.

In the capture, it seems that the DHCP request/discover packet is sent 'tagged' in VLAN 2. Is that because of the way you captured the packet? If this capture is from the actual switch port that connects the AP, that seems bad. Do you have a console cable for the AP? Then you can check if there is vlan config left somewhere in the AP, and try resetting the management VLAN from the apboot. Doing another hardware pin-button factory reset may work as well to get such config removed, or if that doesn't work configure a tagged VLAN 2 on the AP port and assign an IP on there.

Aruba support may help as well as I found that if you are in a situation where there is a management VLAN in the AP, it can take a few attempts to get rid of that config and you need to watch the logs carefully. The AP can retrieve the management VLAN from a backup which survives some types of AP resets.

This capture is from the 7010 controller port and unfortunatelly I don't have the console cable to AP315. So I understand that the VLAN ID can be the problem. So far my understanding is as you described but this is everything what I know. The APs were pin-button reseted and I was surprised that there are looking the vlan 2 ID.

I've tried to create new vlan with ID 2 on the port to which the AP is connected but with no possitive effect. Maybe I am doing something wrong in my steps so if this is no problem could you describe your steps to create separated vlan with ID 2 and DHCP enabled? As I mentioned before my DHCP is right now on the router.

One 'ugly' method might be to configure one switch port in the 'normal VLAN' and another in VLAN2 (untagged) and plug a cable between those ports to get both VLANs interconnected. Then if you have the AP port with tagged VLAN2, you should get an IP address if it indeed uses a tagged VLAN of 2. That only works if you have 2 ports left on your switch, and if spanning tree does not kick in.

The suggested method of creating VLAN2 on the controller and create a DHCP on there may also work, but may be a bit more work for something that is (hopefully) temporary.

If you have access, you probably can remove the management VLAN configuration.

If I well understand it looks like this "ugly" method finally works because I can see that IP address of my second VLAN is assigned to the AP (192.168.2.3 255.255.255.0) but I still can't see this AP under my 7010 controller. Could you check the log below and tell me if you see what is wrong?

Is you controller IP 192.168.1.254 and reachable from the AP?
Also, does the controller have a route back (or directly connected)?

Through ADP the AP will connect to the controller-ip. You may need to change that with directly connected APs.

Yes, my controller ip is 192.168.1.254
Maybe I will describe my current configuration to avoid misunderstanding because I could wrong understand previous instructions.
    I've defined 2 VLANs
    ID 1: 192.168.1.254 (assigned ports 0,2,4)
    ID 2: 192.168.2.1 (assigned ports 0,1,2,4,6)
AP is directly connected to port 6
Port 2 is connected to port 4 and those ports are defined as the trunk ports (the same is for 0).
Is the CDP option also available on the controller? In my configuration/ports/6 options I can see only the LLDP (e.g PDU transmission, Reception of LLDP PDUs, LLDP-MED TLVs). Those options can be used alternatively?

I mentioned CDP where I meant ADP; previous message has been edited to reflect that. LLDP is not used for controller discovery, ADP, DNS, DHCP, static are the most widely used methods.

Is the controller reachable through 192.168.1.254, and does the controller NOT have an IP in 192.168.2.x?

Maybe the command 'show log all 100' on the controller shows something about your AP and if the controller possibly rejects the AP? Could be the Control Path Security certificate provisioning.

Your dhcp server is only supplying an ip address and subnet mask.  It is not providing a default gateway to that AP.  Try correcting that.

The controller have the ip 192.168.1.254 and I have access to the WebUI under this ip. I've created the vlan 2 (192.168.2.x) only for the AP purpose.
I've checked the 'show log all 100" and this is the result (looks very bad):

What version of ArubaOS are you running on the controller?  The AP booting up is running AOS 6.5.0.0
Fact:  Even though the AP discovers the controller on its own VLAN, it still needs to be able to route to the controller-ip to communicate.

Can you try to upgrade the controller again to the same version? In some upgrade paths, the controller upgrade needs to be done twice in order to get the 'ancillary image' properly installed. You may see messages in the controller log or CLI that indicates that you would need to upgrade once more. Normally these messages mean that the controller version does not support the AP, but 6.5.4 should support the AP-315.

I lost hope a little bit but I return to the topic to summarize the issue.
I've checked options for upgrading and I see that access to the support site is needed but I don't have this and I don't have the company yet.
My assumption from the beginning was to just buy the license only for the APs and run those devices in my home environment.
This second hand controller was upgraded on the previous owner side and from the beginning I saw the warning about "Ancillary files are not present" but because I didn't find the clear information about this I thought that this is not real issue related to my problems with the APs.

Do you have any other idea how to resolve the issue or only aruba support can fix this?

Did you try to reinstall the OS image? As it was previously written, sometimes you need to do it multiple times. In worst case you will need to clear OS image from partition 0 and update it via boot loader.

Ok but I understand that I still need to have aruba OS image file:

    In the WebUI

The following steps describe how to upgrade ArubaOS from a TFTP server, FTP server, or local file (step 1).

    1. Download the ArubaOS image from the <madcap:conditionaltext data-mc-conditions="ArubaFrameStyles.ArubaCondition,ArubaFrameStyles.AlcatelCondition">customer support site</madcap:conditionaltext>.

    2. Upload the ArubaOS image to a PC or workstation on your network.

    3. Validate the SHA hash for the ArubaOS image:

    a. Download the Aruba.sha256 file from the download directory.

    b. Load the ArubaOS image to a Linux system and execute the sha256sum <filename> command. Alternatively, use a suitable tool for your operating system that can generate a SHA256 hash of a file.

    c. Verify that the output produced by this command matches the hash value found on the <madcap:conditionaltext data-mc-conditions="ArubaFrameStyles.ArubaCondition,ArubaFrameStyles.AlcatelCondition">customer support site</madcap:conditionaltext>.

The ArubaOS image file is digitally signed and is verified using RSA2048 certificates preloaded at the factory. The Mobility Conductor or managed device will not load a corrupted ArubaOS image.

    4. Log in to the ArubaOS WebUI from the Mobility Conductor.

    5. Navigate to the Maintenance > Software Management > Upgrade page.

    a. Select the Local File option from the Upgrade using drop-down list.

    b. Click Browse from the Image file name to navigate to the saved image file on your PC or workstation.

    6. Select the downloaded image file.

    7. Choose the partition from the Partition to Upgrade option.

    8. Enable the Reboot Controller After Upgrade toggle switch to automatically reboot after upgrading. If you do not want to reboot immediately, disable this option.

Am I correct or there is another option to get this image?

Yes. OS image is mandatory prerequisite. You have corrupt image on your controller and there is no other way to resolve it. Ask the seller if he can provide you an image. Or check with serial number if it is eligible for download.

Here are the steps to create a DHCP server on the controller:

    https://community.arubanetworks.com/blogs/arunkumar1/2020/10/20/how-to-configure-a-dhcp-server-on-the-aruba-controller

As Herman indicated, a full reset on the AP's may clear any unusual configurations.

Here is the AP discovery logic on AOS6:
