    Hello,

I have a question regarding upgrading an Aruba 2920 J9728A Switch Stack. The current Version on the stack is  - WB.16.04.0008, and I would like to update to the latest - WB.16.09.0022.
Can I upgrade the Switches straightaway with the new Version, or must I load intermediate Versions beforehand?

    Many thanks
    Paul B

Hi, generally Release Notes documents report upgrade/downgrade notes so I suggest you to have first a look at Release Notes released for the first builds respectively published on 16.04, 16.05, 16.06, 16.07, 16.08 and 16.09 software releases (where still available <- 16.05 - 16.07 probably don't worth a read since are EoS...don't remember about 16.08)...to simplify please at least read 16.08 and 16.09 Release Noted since, at worst, the BootROM version could have changed in between first 16.04 and latest 16.09...and BootROM (already embedded into the SWI file, when necessary) will automatically update first when necessary causing one more reboot of the standalone/stacked switch(es) executed automatically before the launched procedure will continue by updating/upgrading the ArubaOS-Switch system software.

Expect the whole stack to reboot at least one time, at worst two times (here I'm implying a 16.04 -> 16.09 single jump scenario without any intermediate step).

    Thanks Parnassus,

that was a quick reply. I will have a look at the release notes as you suggested and report my findings.

    Cheers

    Hello again Parnassus,

you are absolutely right, thank you very much. On the final pages of the release notes for 16.10.0022, under the"Upgrading Restrictions and Guidelines" section, it states just as you suggested as a worst case scenario, the switch will boot twice if the BootROM is being updated.

    Cheers

Hi Paul, if I not mistaken Release Notes of the WB Software line (HP/Aruba 2920) reports:

    • WB.16.04.0008 uses BootROM WB.16.03
    • WB.16.09.0022 uses BootROM WB.16.03
    • WB.16.10.0023 uses BootROM WB.16.03
so you shouldn't expect any dual reboot upgrading from WB.16.04.0008 to WB.16.09.0022 (or to WB.16.10.0023); to be sure about your starting point please check the software version (show version and show flash) on your HP 2920 stack.

Note: the WB software line doesn't appear on 16.11 Software release so keep the 16.10 as the last one available.

    Hi Parnassus,

the Switch currently has WB.16.04.008, and I will upgrade to WB.16.10.0023, so it should have the same BootROM. The main thing is, is that it looks like I don't need to use additional Versions, which is good news,

    Cheers
    Paul
