We are planning to buy a new Aruba WLC and we did not want to just replace the old WLC directly causing all the APs to go offline at the same time. is it possible that we integrate the new WLC into the network while the old one is still running and then set the APs to join the new WLC one by one? is there a setting where we can configure the old WLC as Primary and the new AP as the secondary?

Probably there is something possible, but it really depends on what you have deployed now and what you plan to move to, like if you add the controller for additional capacity, for redundancy, for newer version, features like IDPS not available in older hardware.

I'd recommend to work with your Aruba partner as they may know your environment and can more specifically advise what is best to do.

    This is just general advice:

If you are installing the controller on the same management VLAN and the clients are being placed in the same layer 2 VLAN, you can absolutely try to do this.

    • Install the second controller, with the same version of ArubaOS and configure it with the same SSIDs and ap-groups.
    • Have a Test AP that you want to migrate to the new controller that is out of earshot of all other APS.

You can then use the ap-move command (https://community.arubanetworks.com/community-home/librarydocuments/viewdocument?DocumentKey=411a512f-907c-4888-9c3b-ff41ed93bf24&CommunityKey=39a6bdf4-2376-46f9-853a-49420d2d0caa&tab=librarydocuments) to move that single AP to the second controller to test.

    Good luck in advance.
