    Hi community,

    I did a firmware update (PT.02.14 -> PT.02.15) of my switch HPE 1820 24G PoE+ (185W) Switch (J9983A):
    https://asp.arubanetworks.com/downloads/software/RmlsZToxYmRmNzBjOC0zMzg2LTExZWQtODhmYy0yZjNjYzJkOTVjMjQ%3D

Since then the web interface is not working but traffic is passed normally, POE devices are working and I can also ping it.

Any idea what the issue might be and how fix it?

    Thanks,
    Oliver

Hello Oliver, have you already tried to perform a logon attempt using Private/Incognito modes (depending on the Web Browser you are using) to see if the switch's web dashboard pops up correctly? Have you already cleared the cache of your Web Browser? is your Web Browser fully updated?

Hi, the switch is not reachable via its static IP.
I tried several browser (Firefox, Chrome, IE, Safari) in private modes and also on several devices (PC, VM, mobile phone) - browsers are updated.
    Error in browser:
'The connection has timed out - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx took too long to respond.'

Well, you initially wrote "web interface is not working" without specifying that "the switch is not reachable via its static IP."...so my approach.

Given that maybe (I don't own an HPE 1820) the static IP address you assigned was wiped out (which would be very strange) so - again - maybe the switch defaulted to DHCP mode for its VLAN 1 IP Addressing waiting for an IP Address to be assigned by a DHCP Server (if any) until, when it doesn't receive one, it fails back by auto-assigning the 192.168.1.1 IP Address to VLAN 1 for its Web Management (as per Quick Setup Guide). Have you tried?

    Sorry for the missing information.

The static IP is still used (assuming by the switch itself) since I can ping it successfully and I do not see any further devices on my DHCP server, which got a new IP address assigned.

Connecting to the switch (detached from DHCP server) via 192.168.1.1 did not work unfortunately.
I observed in older patches, that the static IP got wiped out and the switch jumped back to DHCP mode after the upgrade, which was not an issue since the web interface was reachable under the new DHCP address but in this case it has (most likely) the old static IP address, the traffic is passed but only (so far observed) the web-interface does not work.

On my switches I tried it all.

The issue remains the same, while using static IP configuration, dynamic IP received by DHCP or factory default IP 192.168.1.1 after a full reset.

The switches always answers to pings on its address, but a port-scan does not show any open ports for HTTP, HTTPS or anything else.

    I have the same issue on a 1820-24G (J9980A) and a 1820-8G (J9979A) after updating from PT.02.12 to PT.02.15.

Alain, did I understood it correctly, that the full reset did not help either?

Yes. Unless there is a secret way to revert to the backup image without a working web interface, that device is probably bricked.

I just ran into this and found that the web interface is actually accessible at 192.168.1.1 - it's like the switch isn't picking up its own DHCP address.

I was able to get at the interface by manually configuring my computer with the address 192.168.1.42 / 255.255.255.0 + gateway 192.168.1.1 and then pointing my web browser at 192.168.1.1

Hello, "it's like the switch isn't picking up its own DHCP address." what does this statement mean? if the Switch doesn't receive a DHCP Offer it should fail back to assigning 192.168.1.1 to its VLAN 1 interface so it should automatically be available at that IP Address.

    As I initially wrote above:

"...maybe the switch defaulted to DHCP mode for its VLAN 1 IP Addressing waiting for an IP Address to be assigned by a DHCP Server (if any) until, when it doesn't receive one, it fails back by auto-assigning the 192.168.1.1 IP Address to VLAN 1 for its Web Management (as per Quick Setup Guide). Have you tried?"

So it's a matter to configure a Client PC to test that connectivity (I mean a Client PC directly connected to that Switch configured with a compatible fixed IP Address trying to connect to 192.168.1.1).

That could have been worded better on my part. What I meant was that the web server component wasn't picking up the assigned address and moving to it - it's seemingly staying on 192.168.1.1

Right, this approach was already mentioned by @parnassus initially, which I've tested without success.
Despite the fact, that the web-interface is not reachable on address 192.168.1.1, I also did not receive a ping response on that address but I still get a ping for the static address.

@Westside guy: just to understand your scenario - what did your switch use before the update to P2.15: Static or DHCP address?

Static DHCP - meaning the DHCP server always assigns the same fixed address, based on the MAC. FWIW I did try setting a static address, but that made no difference.

Possibly interesting additional note: Rolling back to an earlier version has *not* fixed the issue for me. Web server remains at 192.168.1.1 even after going back to 02.12

Okay, thanks all for the hints/input.

Currently, I'm not sure whether I should try the full reset to avoid making it more worse and run into same scenario like @AlainWolf mentioned, that the switch stopped working at all.

And since there is no other way to revert the update, crossing-fingers my switch will stay alive for a while.

Is there a chance to get any support from HPE/Aruba for this issue?

I am also having the same issue after an update from PT.01.10 -> PT.02.15. This is happening to me on a 1820 48G PoE+ switch. The switch is still operating correctly and I have no other issues with it. Before the update I needed to connect with TLS version 1.0 specified in my browser. When I ping the static IP address assigned to the switch I get a reply indicating the switch is live with the correct IP. When I use the same browser settings the page never resolves. I have updated 2 other switches to PT.02.15 and their web interface is working correctly on both. Seems strange that this is only affecting one of my switches and not all.

    Hi,

HPE/Aruba support confirmed to me that they had a number of their clients updating their switches without encountering any issues.

What just came to my mind now:
Did any of you who encountered this issue, have their own certificates installed on the switch?

Because we did on our switches. Maybe that's messing up the web-server on the switch during or after the update.

One of my failed switches got a replacement from support, I will do some additional tests later this week on the failed one, before returning it.

Interesting hint, but in my case there were no certification installed.

I have rather the assumption it might be related to the static IP configuration...

Alain, may I ask how old your switch is, which got replaced?

Did you get the following error?

    ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH

I did and my web gui can't start on https port. I use http port to access it.

Edit: Then I check my FW version and it is 2.14 :-( 2.15 should correct this error.

The one replaced is a HPE OfficeConnect 1820 24-Port which also was a warranty replacement that we received August 2021.

    Prod-No. J9980-60001, Revision: 32.00

The other one suffering the same issue is a HPE OfficeConnect 1820 8-Port (J9979A) we bought in November 2019.

The replacement came with firmware PT.02.06 installed.
I updated it to PT.02.15 before doing any changes to its default configuration and did not encounter any issues.

Maybe resetting configurations to factory-defaults, before uploading the update might avoid the issue.

    Thanks Alain.

I've contacted the HPE/Aruba support today and they've also confirmed a replacement for my switch.
The support suspects the latest patch being buggy as they've already observed many complains reporting same issue...

So, replacement seems to be the only solution in this case.

    Thanks to all,
    Oliver

I just ran into this also. Switch has a static IP and a used a self-generated certificate from the device itself (not one I uploaded).

After the upgrade, only ping and snmp work, nothing else. Power cycling doesn't help either.

Please guys, yank this update from your web page!!!

I'm having this exact same issue on a J9983A after upgrading from PT.02.14 -> PT.02.15. The switch has a statically assigned IP and is using a device-generated certificate. Ping and SNMP work, but nothing else does at all.

Please, Aruba/HPE, remove this broken update from your web page!!!

You need to factory reset switch via the reset button on the switch. Or if you have http access enabled, you can access it via http.
Configuration will be lost, so you need to reconfigure the switch afterwards.

The PT.02.16 update, which was posted a week or so ago, does seem to fix the problem. Of course, that's assuming you can kludge your way into the server at 192.168.1.1
