How to change the boot partition of Instant and perform an upgrade.

Apr 06, 2015 06:46 AM

Environment- This article applies to all Instant models and versions.

Answer- Instant has 2 partitions: Primary[0] & Backup[1]

Both these partitions would store image versions related to IAP or AOS.
When we convert an IAP to CAP/RAP, the controller-based AP firmware is stored on partition Primary Partition.
Similarly, when we upgrade the firmware of Instant, primary partition gets upgraded.

Below is the command to check the partition and the image version stored when the unit is operating in Instant mode:

00:24:6c:c8:68:98# show image version

Primary Partition Build Time     :2015-01-15 08:03:57 PST
Primary Partition Build Version  :6.4.2.3-4.1.1.2_48114
Backup Partition Build Time      :2015-02-15 12:54:42 PST
Backup Partition Build Version   :6.4.2.3-4.1.1.3_48629

00:24:6c:c8:68:98# show version
Aruba Operating System Software.
ArubaOS (MODEL: 105), Version 6.4.2.3-4.1.1.2

As we see from the above command, primary runs 4.1.1.2 and backup runs 4.1.1.3. If at any point we want to change the boot partition of the Instant the below command needs to be executed from CLI. This is not available in GUI:

00:24:6c:c8:68:98# switch-partition-reboot
=========[now the AP will reboot]===========

00:24:6c:c8:68:98# show version
Alcatel-Lucent Operating System-Wireless.

AP uptime is 2 minutes 8 seconds
Reboot Time and Cause: AP rebooted Fri Dec 31 16:40:17 UTC 1999; CLI cmd at uptime 0D 0H 40M 16S: switch-partition-reboot

00:24:6c:c8:68:98# show image version

Primary Partition Build Time     :2015-02-15 12:54:42 PST
Primary Partition Build Version  :6.4.2.3-4.1.1.3_48629
Backup Partition Build Time      :2015-01-15 08:03:57 PST
Backup Partition Build Version   :6.4.2.3-4.1.1.2_48114

Now if an upgrade is performed, the new image will get stored in partition 0.
