What is the difference between AP-105 and IAP-105 during booting?

Jul 01, 2014 08:21 PM

Product and Software: This article applies to all Aruba Instant platforms and versions.

When troubleshooting an IAP-105 or AP-105, how do I determine if the device is acting as AP or IAP (master) or IAP (slave)?

  •  Provide the device serial number to TAC to check the device identity.
  •  Look on the back panel of the device. The label displays the device type (AP-105 or IAP-105).

If someone has changed the IAP to AP, how do I determine if the device is acting as IAP or AP? Access the console of the device and look into the boot process. These are the two best ways:

  •  During the boot process, check the OS version as shown here.

For an IAP-105
Booting OS partition 0
Checking image @ 0xbf100000

Image is signed; verifying checksum... passed
Signer Cert OK
Policy Cert OK
RSA signature verified.
ELF file is 32 bit
Loading .text @ 0x80e00000 (6031160 bytes)
Loading .data @ 0x813c0740 (32 bytes)
Clearing .bss @ 0x813c0760 (16 bytes)
## Starting application at 0x80e00000 ... Uncompressing.........................................................
Aruba Networks ArubaOS Version 6.1.3.1-3.0.0.0 (build 33460 / label #33460)

For a Campus AP
Booting OS partition 1
Checking image @ 0xbf800000

Image is signed; verifying checksum... passed
Signer Cert OK
Policy Cert OK
RSA signature verified.
ELF file is 32 bit
Loading .text @ 0x80e00000 (3755944 bytes)
Loading .data @ 0x81194fb0 (32 bytes)

At the end of the AP boot process you can determine whether the device is acting as campus AP (CAP) or IAP master or IAP slave.

As a CAP

The boot process stops with this message:

"Starting FIPS KAT ... Completed FIPS KAT

shutting down watchdog process (nanny will restart it)...

<<<<< Welcome to the Access Point >>>>>"

As an IAP Master

The message says that the device is acting as an IAP master:

"shutting down watchdog process (nanny will restart it)...
ip_time_handler: Got ip and packets on bond0 Started master election 4-0

<<<<< Welcome to the Access Point >>>>>
process `snmpd' is using obsolete setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT
i am master
now asap_send_elected_master: sent successfully
User: "

As a IAP Slave

This boot message shows that the master election was successful and the IAP is acting as a slave:

"Starting FIPS KAT ... Completed FIPS KAT

shutting down watchdog process (nanny will restart it)...
ip_time_handler: Got ip and packets on bond0 Started master election 16-0

<<<<< Welcome to the Access Point >>>>>

process `snmpd' is using obsolete setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT
asap_send_elected_master: sent successfully
wait for stm to initialize over
asap_send_elected_master: sent successfully
