OVA is for the initial install.
When the choices are listed as:
ArubaOS_VMC_8.2.1.0_64044
ArubaOS_VMC_8.2.1.0_64044.iso
ArubaOS_VMC_8.2.1.0_64044.ova
You'd need the image w/o the extension for a fw upgrade (so in the example above, the non-ova/non-iso image.

Hey, take a look at the below in the first instance. Upgrading to AOS8 will wipe the configuration, so you will need to ensure you have the relevant backups.
You will need the below if you wish to upgrade the 72xx series:
ACMA, ACMP, ACSA
If my post addresses your query, give kudos:)

You should be able to upgrade an individual controller unless you have it setup in an MD cluster. It might be worth it to try opening a TAC case since they've run through this before. I haven't tried any MM/MD setups in my testing yet.

Gerard, the link to download the 8.2.1 software image for your 7205 is below:
You need to sign into the support site with valid credentials in order to download the software.I agree with Rob, if you haven't worked with 8.x previously, you'll want to have a TAC case open before upgrading an operating network from 6.5 to 8.x.
