I'm trying to delete some locally defined clearpass attributes that are surplus to requriements. When I try I get a message saying

"Cannot delete these attributes; They are referenced by policies"

Of course looking throguh my policiers, I can;t see where these attribtes are defined. Is there any way of doing a search or having cppm display where they are used  (vsn 6.7.1 BTW)

Unfortunately no. You'll need to locate them in the various policy elements.
