Wireless Access

Hello,

We upgraded our local controller to a new OS and after doing so, the APs that are terminated locally are not connecting. The APs are also down in the master controller. We tried powering off the APs but when they came back up they still did not connect to any of the controllers. What should we do? We would prefer not purging the APs since that would be a lot of work consoling into each AP through the console port. Thanks.

How do those access points discover their local controller?

Did you upgrade just your locals, or your local AND your master controller?  If you only upgraded your local controllers, your access points are probably using DNS to reach your master, connecting, being redirected to the local controller which has a different code.  When they reach the local, they downgrade, reboot, find the master, upgrade...  you get the point.  Upgrade the master to the same version of code ASAP to keep this from happening.

The master and local have thesame OS version. Is there a way to remotely console into an AP? We are using AP 124.

Unless the access point can contact a controller to get the instruction to ALLOW you to remotely manage it, you cannot.

how do your access points discovery your controller?  DNS, DHCP?

What version did you upgrade from> to?

Type "show log system 50" on the commandline of your controller to see if you can see any ap activity.

Type "show ap database" to see if you can see any flags next to your access points.

Last but not least, type "show datapath session table <ip address of one access point you can ping>" to see if it is sending any traffic to the controller.

The access points discover the master through DNS. Once in the master, there is an LMS IP pointing to the local. We upgraded to version 6.1.4.3. None of the AP IPs could be ping'ed by any of the controllers.

That is a big issue, then.  You need to take a step back and find out if your DHCP server is giving out addresses and take it from there...

If I set the local controller into a master, and connect each AP directly to one of its ports, and have a DHCP setup through the controller. Will a plugged in AP show up in the local controller? Does DNS come first that ADP? If the AP will terminate to this controller, I could reprovision it to this master (the local actually) and then after reprovisioning all APs I will convert this master to a local. Will this work?  Thanks.

ADP comes before DNS, so it would find the local controller first.  BUT, you need to figure out if any why those access points are not getting ip addresses.  They are useless if they are not obtaining ip addresses.
