Replace a 2920-48G-POE with a 2530-48G-POE

    Hello Airheads,

    I have a question about replacing a 2920-48G-POE switch with a newer 2530-48G-POE? Will the SFP ports work with an older 2920-24G Switch that is using SFP?

    I can't afford to replace all of our switches to new ones. Only one at a time? Ugh... 

    Any suggestions?

    It probably will, you should try looking for a transceiver compatibility guide on the Aruba/HPE site and researching the SFP's part #.

    I just got this from a rep so this is good news. 

    SFP is compatible with SFP+ as long as the optics match on each end.  So if you have a switch with SFP ports, you can use SFP (1gig) optics in each side and connect to a SFP+ port.

    Hello Jean-Claude,

    technically speaking an Aruba 2920 (known also as HP ProCurve 2920) - even if its EoS was declared starting at mid 2018 (while most of 2530 models are still sold today and no EoS was declared yet, just a few of them - those with uplink 10G SFP+ ports - were declared EoS during 2017) - is far superior than the Aruba 2530 (also known as HP ProCurve 2530)...consider that 2920 Switch series supports IP Routing, the 2530 Switch series doesn't (it's a simple Layer 2 switch)...and I don't believe the 2530 can be considered "newer" than the 2920 neither architecturally speaking nor from the age standpoint...both date back to 2013 IIRC.

    Apart from that, SFP Transceivers supported by the HP 2920 (such as J4858C just to name one as example) are also supported on Aruba 2530 provided that you're dealing with genuine and supported "optics" (see latest HP 2920 QuickSpecs and latest Aruba 2530 QuickSpecs).

    Pay attention that SFP+ Slots (not available on current Aruba 2530) can accomodate SFP+ or SFP Transceivers, SFP Slots support (recognize) only SFP Transceviers (so no 10G speed).

    Also the ArubaOS-Switch and ArubaOS-CX Transceiver Guide (10th Edition) January 2021 can be very helpful.

    Edit: forgot to say that both HP/Aruba 2920 and 2530 Switch series can be kept very well updated until now (latest are WB.16.10.0010 for 2920 and YA/YB.16.10.0011 for 2530). See here (December 2020).
