5400 VSF with redundant management modules - How to connect OOBM-MAD?

    Aruba started to suppoer VSF between 5400R switches with redunndact management modules, but I couldn't find any clear document about the recommended way to connect OOBM-MAD in this case. Should I connect OOB-MAD between active maanagement modules only? what about if the module failed? the switch will think the other switch is down and it may shut down the ports on the 2nd switch.

     

    What is the recommendation in this case:

     

    - Don't connect OOBM-MAD

     

    - Connect active management module to active and backup to backup

     

    - other setup

    Are you referring specifically to OoBM MAD? ...otherwise your various questions have no meaning.

    Greetings!

     

    For OoBM-MAD to function properly, the active management module (MM) for each member must be able to connect to the active MM on the other member regardless of which MM is active on either chassis. Keeping that in mind, you would need to connect both OoBM ports on both members to a common switch rather than directly connecting the MMs to each other. This way, either MM will be able to communicate with its active counterpart, even in the event of a MM failure on either chassis.

     

    Note that only one OoBM port on each VSF member will actually be up at any given time, as the inactive MM in a VSF-enabled 5400R chassis is automatically shutdown when it is inserted or detected during the boot process.

    Is it possible to use any access switch connected by MC-LAG to both 5400 for this purpose?

     

    LLDP MAD is another way of doing it, but all access switches are Cisco 2960 and I am not sure if they support this setup.

    Yes, it is...the Switch just need to be there to connect each MM port to it (no MC-LAG is necessary for OoBMs connections)...

    LLDP MAD requires a LACP Trunk Group originating on a 3rd party Switch (and that Trunk Group needs to be tagged on a VLAN)...that's valid also for Cisco 2960.
