Change subnet mask AOS 8 Cluster

I have two Aruba 7210 controllers in a cluster managed with a Mobility Conductor. I would like to change the subnet mask on the MDs and the MC. If I try to do this through the GUI I'll get an error message saying basically that the controller ip is configured in the cluster profile.
If I understand the error message correct I can not change ip-address settings when the controller is in a cluster.

Is it possible to remove on controller from the cluster, change the subnet mask and then add it back to the cluster. Then proceed and to the same with the second controller? Will this work or will it not allow me to do this because of mismatching subnetmask? Only the subnet mask needs to be changed and the subnet will become larger. So routing/communication should not be an issue.

Controllers and MC are on the same vlan.

You can find an explanation on how to do it here: https://community.arubanetworks.com/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?MessageKey=6e56ab5c-b487-40d0-8401-d7d989ea144b&CommunityKey=867d34a4-1e6a-4b9a-9349-df7b4c84b3cb&tab=digestviewer#bm6e56ab5c-b487-40d0-8401-d7d989ea144b(see the last comment made by Colin).

I have seen that thread but they are talking about changing the entire subnet, vlan, ip-address (vrrp). I want to keep the same ip-addresses and vlan. Only modify the subnet mask.

Don't see why you couldn't, as what you are doing is a subset of what was discussed in that thread (and if I understood your initial question correctly).

The main point is that you have to break the cluster, change what you want on both controllers, and then recreate the cluster.

The question is if I need to remove both controllers from the cluster or If I can change one at a time?

    Something like this.
Remove controller A, change subnet mask. Join it to the cluster again.
Remove controller B, change subnet mask. Join it to the cluster again.
If this somehow will help to minimize the AP downtime.

The other option being remove both controllers, change subnet and then rejoin them to the cluster.
And what about the Mobility Conductor can I change the subnet mask on this later without any problems?

    Hi Christoffer,

I never had to change the subnet mask on MC so far, but if all three are currently in the same subnet you will have to do it at the same time (break the cluster, change the subnet mask on 7210s (using #mdconnect from the Conductor), change the subnet on the Conductor, then recreate the cluster).

    Hi Christoffer

Were you able to change the subnet mask?

I will need to do that soon and getting some doughts here.

Can you share the steps that you use?

    Thanks in advanced

Hello, I realise that I never went back to this post with the answear. I was able to change the subnet mask and there were no problems doing so.

I don't remember exactly what steps I used but I think I did something like this

    1. Remove on MD from cluster, change subnet, put back in cluster, remove the second MD, change subnet, put back in cluster.
    2. Then is changed subnet on the MC.

I'll check if I have some notes saved that can be usefull.

    Hi Christoffer

    Thanks for the help..

When you remove the MD1 from cluster, changed the mask and readded configuration is not affected correct?

We also need to change the mask of the Clearpass , so we are planning it carefully.

    Thanks

I didn't find any notes from back then. But I remember that the change was smooth without any downtime. APs was running in the cluster during the entire move.

No configuration changed in the cluster after I readded. You should verify that the cluster is running after the readd and before you remove the second MD.

Notice that my cluster was a L2-cluster with APs in the same vlan. I also proably was running on a diffrent software version compaired to what you are running now. You should treat it as any other software update regarding backup and potential downtime.

    Hi Christoffer

    Thanks for the feedback.

    Done today

    Works smootlhy.
Major thing is just remove the MC frim the cluster and then re-add them

    Nice!

    Thanks
