Degraded performance and package duplication with CX 10000 (CX 10k) and private VLAN with Synergy

    Hello all,

    does someone already have experience with the setup of a CX 10k with HPE Synergy after deployment like described in https://www.arubanetworks.com/techdocs/AOS-CX/10.09/PDF/HPE_Synergy_and_CX_10000_Networking_Deployment_Guide.pdf ?

    We have the problem of a huge withdraw in bandwidth and the breakage of UDP traffic since we moved all VMware VMs to the private VLAN. Currently the PSM is not active. 

    The following symptoms were observed.

    IPERF3-Test

    PVLAN -VM <=> PVLAN-VM => Degraded

    Primary-VLAN <=> PVLAN-VM => 1 Gig/s

    Ping

    PVLAN-VM to PVLAN -VM => Duplicate Answers

    Primary-VLAN <=> PVLAN -VM => Duplicate Answers

    We see a huge number of Jumbo frames.

    copp-policy statistics show a huge number of ip-exceptions.

    Monitoring shows an increasing number of retransmits with more traffic on VMs.

    Several applications using UDP, like Citrix, broke after moving the VM to the PVLAN. Both when accessing from VLAN 100 and from the PVLAN.

    We had to disable duplicate address detection on all Windows devices. (See e.g. https://sps-support.honeywell.com/s/article/False-duplicate-IP-address-detected-on-Windows-devices or https://knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/344094/automatic-private-ip-addressing-apipa-on.html) We did not disable GARP on the CX10k to avoid any side effects.

    From the taken PCAPs we can see a quite big number of Malformed Packets" and „Unreassembled fragments" which is unusual.

    Does somebody here had the same experience or has any ideas on this?

    Hi, what is the MTU setting on the physical interfaces of the CX switch?

    Hi Anders,

    the adapters inside VMware have MTU 1500 configured.
    On the switch we tried both 1500 and 9198 but this didn't make a difference.
