    Hi

I'm troubleshooting an issue where Bonjour/mDNS clients, particularly printers, automatically rename themselves because they think that there's another device on the network with the same name.
I have confirmed that there are no loops on the network (Aruba 2530s with loop-protect active on all switches and ports) and there are certainly no client devices with duplicate names.
The network setup is very simple. It's a small flat network with the one wireless SSID dropping wireless clients onto the same broadcast domain as the wired devices. The SSID settings are pretty much the default with ARP broadcast filtering enabled. Airgroup is on with the following settings:

    airplay Enabled _airplay._tcp AirPlay
                          _raop._tcp
                          _appletv-v2._tcp
    airprint Enabled _ipp._tcp AirPrint
                          _pdl-datastream._tcp
                          _printer._tcp
                          _scanner._tcp
                          _http._tcp
                          _http-alt._tcp
                          _ipp-tls._tcp
                          _fax-ipp._tcp
                          _riousbprint._tcp

                          _xgrid._tcp
googlecast Disabled _googlecast._tcp GoogleCast supported by Chromecast etc
AmazonTV Disabled _amzn-wplay._tcp Amazon fire tv

Possibly related is this entry, constantly repeated, when I 'show log system' on an AP:

The problem is, the issue is sporadic and doesn't seem to be reproducible and so makes it more difficult to troubleshoot.

    Any suggestions very much welcomed.

    Thank you

    Hi sram,

AirGroup is particularly useful when you have zero configuration services that you would like to be accessible across multiple VLANs. In your case it sounds like all of your devices are within the same broadcast domain so the question is, is AirGroup actually required in your situation?

Thank you for taking the time to reply. You raise a valid point and I came to this conclusion last week. I have actually now turned off Airgroup completely but of course it was required when the broadcast filtering was set to its default value of ARP. I have also now disabled broadcast filtering meaning that the APs are simply bridging wireless to wired hence all mDNS services on the wired lan are now available on the wireless and vice versa. Things appear to have stabilised and so I think we're ok for now.
We have suggested the implementation of at least one VLAN along with an Aruba CX 6200 to handle the inter-vlan routing. Then we will of course need to re-enable ARP filtering and configure airgroup.

One thing I struggled with was finding a clear recommendation (or VRD) of how to handle broadcast filtering and airgroup on a flat network. The assumption seems to be that any SSID created will operated on a different VLAN. After this experience I now believe that having the default ARP filtering enabled along with Airgroup configured on a flat network is detrimental and can cause the problems I experienced.

Appreciate any thoughts from those more knowledgeable in these areas.

    Thank you again
