pb power on Switch 5412

    Hello, 

    Just wanted to know how many power supply do we need on a chassis 5412 in order to support a fail over.

    We actually have 2 power supply 700W and the following modules :

    CHASSIS 5412 PRA# show system power-consumption Slot Power Usage:

    When we remove one power supply module I and J fail

    Is there a limitation ? Do we need 3 or 4 power supply 700W ?  Do i have to put 2 power supply 1100W ?

    Please refer the below notes:

    Redundant power supply

    Load-sharing redundant power supplies

    J9828A, max 630 W, system power (12V), 275 W of POE power;

    J9829A, 630 W max system (12 ) power, 900 W max POE power;

    J9830A, 630 W max, system (12V) power, 2500W max POE power

    The above Power supplies can be installed in the back of the 5400R zl2 switches. To provide redundancy, each power supply should be connected to different AC power sources. Then, if one AC power source fails, the switch will continue to run.

    Any combination of J9828A, J9829A and J9830A power supplies can be used in the same switch. However, HPE recommends to only use like supplies in a unit for more deterministic behavior in event of a power supply failure.The switch redundant power supply is hot swappable, but, as indicated by the caution statement on the power supply, it must be disconnected from AC power before being installed or removed.

    Because the switch can run on a single supply, removing a redundant supply will not interrupt switch operation. However, with a single power supply system will power on Interface module up to 630W. The rest of the Interface modules are powered on the priority of the slot. The slot A has the highest priority and the slot L has the lowest priority.

    When power is restored from a second (or more) power supplies, a system reload or interface module reset is not required to restore operation to slots G-L. The 5400R modules will restart by themselves when power recovers.

    Thanks for your answer.

    Something i didn't understand ; i don't use any PoE port , why modules I and J power down when i removed one power supply. 

    If i disable all PoE ports , is the problem is still present ( i mean : when i remove one power supply then modules I and J power off)?

    Hi @julien-tahiti 

    Slot A has the highest priority and the slot L has the lowest priority. With single power supply the top modules (A to H) in this case are only powered ON leaving the botton two modules in slot I and slot J to go offline due to insufficient power.

    Then what is the solution , to put a third 700W power supply ? , replace those presents ( 2 * 700W) by 2* 1100W?

    Hi,

    Yes you can plan to install the 3rd 700W PSU in slot 3 for redundancy.

    Please note, any combination of J9828A (700W), J9829A(1100W) and J9830A(2750W) power supplies can be used in the same switch. However, HPE/Aruba recommends to only use like supplies in a unit for more deterministic behavior in event of a power supply failure

    Hello ,

    And if i disable all poe ports using command : " no interface X power-over-ethernet " ? Is the system continue to reserve power for ports ?

    The no form of the command disables PoE operation on <port-list>.
