Cannot connect through VIA Android APP on mobile data

Hello guys,

 

I am reaching out to you because im encountering a weird issue.

 

I have several Huawei P20 Lite on android 8.0.0.

I have installed, through the play store VIA 3.1.1.

I tested the issue on two different VIA architectures (one at my clients and one in my office) and got the same result.

 

When i start the app and enter the VIA url i am offered to download a VIA profile, download it and then log in.

 

The issue :

When i am on the app's mainscreen where "VPN disconnected" is indicated if i try to connect : 

- Connected to wifi (my phone's, my company's, another company's) : the VPN connects, no issues.

- Connected to mobile data : it tries to connect and fails in half a second.

 

I checked if VIA had sufficient permissions to access mobile data (it has), there is no proxy or port specified in its APN Profile.

 

I tested both my via servers with my personnal phone (OnePlus 5T) and it works perfectly.

 

Have you guys had this issue previously ?

Are you allowing TCP 443  and UDP 4500 on your firewall from the public ip address to your controller?

Yes,

 

As i stated, it works if im using wifi (from home) on the Huawei or my own personnal phone (OnePlus 5T).

Your description is confusing.

 

Did you try it on any other platform like a Windows or Mac?

Are you saying that it doesn't work on mobile data no matter what phone you select or it doesn't work on EITHER phone on mobile?

Sorry if im being confusing :

 

My issue is not on Windows, it works perfectly on them.

My issue is with the Huawei P20 Lite (and Honor 8, that i know of) :

- IF the phone is connected to wifi (a home wifi not company) and i try to connect the VPN, it works no issues.

 

- IF the phone is connected on mobile data (4G/3G/...) and i try to connect the VPN, it does not work.

I can access the VIA URL with a browser through mobile data without any issues.

 

Those scenarios work without any issues on a OnePlus 5T.

Is it the same mobile provider on phones that work and phones that do not work?

 

I would:

- Find out the public ip address of the phone

- SSH into the controller that terminates VIA traffic

- Initiate the Connection on the phone

- Type "show datapath session table <public ip address of phone>" on the controller commandline to see if traffic is even being attempted.

I have three SIM cards from different providers at my disposal, i tested all of them :

- SIM 1 on Huawei : unconclusive

- SIM 2 on Huawei : unconclusive

- SIM 3 on Huawei : unconclusive

 

-SIM 1 on OnePlus : conclusive

-SIM 2 on OnePlus : conclusive

-SIM 3 on OnePlus : conclusive

 

As for the datapath session : 

Its empty.

If you click on the Gear in the upper left hand corner, there is a logs tab in the android app.

Yes, 

 

The logs only show :

 

Starting VPN Connection

VPN Connecting ...

VPN Disconnecting ...

VPN Disconnected 

 

All those messages on the same second.

 

When i turn off mobile data on the phone it behaves exactly the same. As if the app wasnt able to reach out.

 

I tried other VPN apps and they work well.

from the given details it looks like a known issue with VIA when VoLTE is enabled on the phone. We are working on this issue and the fix will be provided soon.

 

Can you check and confirm this by disabling VoLTE on the problematic phone.
