WMS Ageout

Jul 17, 2014 08:38 AM

Question : What does "WMS Ageout" mean and what is the impact of modifying the WMS ageout interval?

Environment Information :

Any Aruba Controller
Any Access Point
Any Aruba OS

Symptoms : Disabling WMS ageout or a large value of WMS ageout can potentially cause memory issues on the Controller for a large deployment with lots of users as well as a with small deployment with very few APs/clients.  Especially Controllers with lesser memory like 6x0/SC1/A2400/800/200.

Cause : WMS ageout will age out the entries in WMS database for AP and client like the listed items in "show wms client list/show wms ap list".  If we disable the ageout, the WMS keeps growing and can cause performance issues.

Resolution : WMS ageout will age out the entries in WMS database for AP and client like the listed items in "show wms client list/show wms ap list".  Disabling WMS ageout or a large value of WMS ageout can potentially cause memory issues on the Controller for a large deployment with lots of users as well as a with small deployment with very few APs/clients.  Especially Controllers with lesser memory like 6x0/SC1/A2400/800/200.  As long as the APs can hear a lot on the air, WMS can still grow.  WMS holds everything the APs/AMs can scan over the air.  Precisely, WMS database records all interfering, known-interfering, suspected rogues, rogues, valid APs and clients.  Default WMS Ageout is 30mins.
