You cannot. There are only 3 channels, so many times access points will end up next to another access point on the same channel. because there are so few channels in the 2.4 ghz band.

Access point channels are chosen by channel quality and not because of the channels of an adjacent access point. It is possible that even though there are access points next to it on channel 11, that is still the best channel to be on. In addition, an access point will see far more access points than your laptop, so it is probably using a larger radius to determine what is a better channel than your laptop is.
